Steven Maher - Teaching Portfolio

Infinitude

Blog

The obligatory edu-blog includes updates on the "project" of Moodle/ELGG integration at a public high school in addition to rants, raves and commentary on the manner in which information and communication tools are changing the world and education.

History Class Website

Mr Maher's

History Classes

This web site provides students with access to class content and materials, in addition to administrative announcements, schedules, and assignment rubrics. The first step to opening the high school history class with technology is creating a web presence.  Parents, tutors, other teachers, special education support teachers all have access to the course schedule and content. Copywritten materials are provided to students in a self-contained, password protected site

Integration of Technology in High School History

Integration Presentation

Although this presentation is somewhat dated (5/06), it  provides an overview of the different ways in which technology can be integrated with a history school history course.

Currently (2/07), Moodle and ELGG are replacing FirstClass as the teaching environment of choice.

(This flash presentation is about 10M)

 F2F/Online Education Presentation

F2F/Online Education Handout

F2F/Online Education PowerPoint

This is the handout and PowerPoint for a presentation for Principles and Practices of Curriculum Development and Supervision at Caldwell College.  It was designed to provide a context for thinking about the integration of technology in education and introduce a program whereby a school district could digitize all of its curriculum materials.  These would be the first steps to enabling a public school to enhance student learning by combining the best qualities of face-to-face and online education.

Teaching in FirstClass

Teacher- Help

Web Site

At the district teacher in-service day in September, 2004, I presented a teacher-training workshop concerning the use of FirstClass as an instructional tool.  As a compliment to the workshop, I created a web site with step-by-step illustrated instructions to help teachers when they returned to the classroom and actually started to use FirstClass.

FirstClass Software

PowerPoint Presentation

FirstClass is an e-mail/information management system.  All students have an e-mail account and each class has common mailboxes through which they can access materials (notes, assignments, etc) and submit homework.

This is a PowerPoint I prepared for a presentation to the Iron Hills Conference Principals meeting in January, 2005.  It includes screenshots of FirstClass and it's use in creating a "paperless school".  It also includes examples of how FirstClass can be used to assign, collect, grade and return homework.

FirstClass is a compliment to the class web site because copy-written content and other protected materials are distributed to students through this self-contained, password protected system.

Technology Applications in Social Studies

Technology Professional Development Program Survey

I designed and presented a staff workshop introducing practical applications of technology to social studies education in 2003.  No professional development program of this sort is going to be successful without a thorough needs assessment.   I distributed this survey before the program in order to determine exactly what teachers knew, and what they wanted to know.

Step-By-Step Tutorials

Adding folders to your FirstClass Mailbox

Experimenting with a program called "Wink", I have created a step-by-step tutorial for teachers that includes a screen video, written instructions and audio
